Your handy guide to sending in Nigeria

Updated this week

You can send One-Way SMS in Nigeria with a registered alpha tag.

However, you can't send MMS messages.

Available Sender IDs

You can only send via registered alpha tags in Nigeria.

Registration and fees may apply.

Alpha tags

Alpha tags allow you to use your brand name as your Sender ID instead of a number. Recipients cannot reply to messages sent using an alpha tag.

To register an alpha tag, please contact support.

Alpha tag registration usually takes 50 business days.

Registration requirements

When registering an alpha tag, you will need to provide:

  • Alpha tag

  • Company name

  • Website

  • Traffic type (transactional or marketing/promotional).

  • Sample content

  • Estimated monthly SMS

  • Service description

Rules and best practices

  • Marketing Traffic:

    • Should be sent during daytime hours only.

    • Opt-in from recipients is mandatory.

  • Network Delivery Issues:

    • Delivery to CDMA networks (e.g. Visaphone, M-Tel) may be unreliable.

  • MTN DND Registry:

    • Subscribers on MTN's Do-Not-Disturb (DND) list can still receive Transactional and OTP messages.

    • Only the end subscriber can request removal from the DND list to resume receiving bulk/marketing traffic.

  • Brand Name Requirement:

  • All Transactional and OTP messages must include the brand name in the message content.

Content guidelines

Before you start sending, carefully review our sending guidelines to understand the types of messages you can't send. Additionally, you must adhere to the specific local regulations outlined below:

  • No gambling
