Group SMS

Updated over a week ago

What is Group SMS?

The Group SMS feature lets you create a group chat experience via SMS, where replies are shared with the entire contact list. It’s ideal for team coordination, alerts, or group updates.

Please Note
Dedicated numbers are a requirement for this feature

How group SMS works

When you send a message to a Group SMS contact list, all members (including yourself) receive the message. Any replies are automatically forwarded to everyone in the group.

Set up group SMS

  1. Create your contact list

    • Add all participants to the list. If you want to receive replies, be sure to include yourself as a contact.

  2. Purchase a dedicated number

    • If you don't have one, you can purchase one here.

  3. Set up an inbound rule

    • Click Add New Rule

      • Give the rule a name

      • Select a Dedicated Number

      • Leave Match For as "Any Message" to allow all replies to be forwarded to the group chat

      • Select GROUP_SMS as the Action

      • Select the Contact List you want to create the group chat for

  4. Send your message

    • You can use any method that sends your message to the list. For example, SMS Campaigns, or the Group Email-to-SMS feature.

Everyone in the list will receive the message—and any replies will be sent to the full group.

You cannot use ClickSend’s transactional email service to send Email to SMS messages.

Can I have multiple group chats?

We advise organising your contact lists by the topic for the groupchat, you will need a different dedicated number for each list to keep conversations separate

Is this service free?

You will be charged per outbound message at normal rates. Inbound messages will continue to be free of charge
