Australian Alpha Tag Registration: International Customers

A Quick Guide to Australian Sender ID Registration for International Customers

Updated today

New telecommunication rules in Australia require businesses to verify their identity before they can use a Sender ID (alpha tag) to send messages. This guide outlines the registration process for our international customers (businesses based outside of Australia).

If your business is based in Australia and has an Australian Business Number (ABN), you don't need this guide. Please follow our standard Sender ID registration process.

I'm an international business, but I have an Australian Business Number (ABN).

If your international business has a registered ABN, you can be treated like a local Australian company after a quick administrative step.

  1. Complete a 'Related Entity' Form: Contact your Account Manager or our Customer Support team. They will send you a 'Related Entity' form to complete. This links your international business with your Australian entity on our records.

  2. Self-Serve Registration: Once the form is processed and approved, you will be able to register your Sender ID through the ClickSend dashboard, following the usual process for Australian businesses.

I'm an international business and I do NOT have an ABN.

If you do not have an ABN, the registration path depends on how you use our services. All pathways will require an identity verification step using our third party verification service Persona. To start this, you must contact your Account Manager or our Customer Support team, who will create the verification request for you.

1. I'm a Direct Customer

You send messages using a Sender ID branded to your own business name.

You will need to verify your own business identity.

  • Step 1: Verify your identity. Contact your Account Manager or our Customer Support team to initiate a verification check via Persona. This will verify your individual and business identity.

  • Step 2: Manual Submission. Once your identity is approved, ClickSend will manually create and submit your Sender ID for registration with the Australian regulator (ACMA).

  • Outcome: When approved by the ACMA, you can use your Sender ID in Australia. If your Persona verification is not approved, you will not be able to use a Sender ID to send messages in Australia.

2. I'm an Entity Associate

You're a marketing agency, events company, etc., sending messages on behalf of your customers.

The process depends on where your end customer is based.

  • If your customer is an Australian business (with an ABN): The process is the same as the Direct Customer path above. Contact your Account Manager or our Customer Support team to initiate a verification check via Persona.

  • If your customer is also an international business (without an ABN): Both you and your customer must be verified.

    1. You must verify your identity, and...

    2. Each of your international customers must also be verified.

  • Once both identities are verified, ClickSend will manually create and submit your Sender ID for registration with the Australian regulator (ACMA).

3. I'm an Electronic Message Service Provider (EMSP)

You resell SMS services to your customers through your own software or CRM.

This pathway requires verification for both you and your end customers.

  • Step 1: Verify your identity. Contact your Account Manager or our Customer Support team to initiate a verification check via Persona.

  • Step 2: Register Your Customers. Once you are approved, we can proceed with your customers.

    • If your customers have an ABN, they can skip verification.

    • If your customers do not have an ABN, they must also be verified.

  • Once both identities are verified, ClickSend will manually create and submit your Sender ID for registration with the Australian regulator (ACMA).
