A Quick Guide to Australia's New SenderID (Alpha Tags) Registration

You've probably heard about the upcoming changes to Sender ID registration in Australia, mandated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). To help you navigate these changes, we've put together a quick guide on what you need to know and what you need to do. You can read more about the full program here.

What You Need to Know

If you are sending SMS in Australia and you use an alphanumeric Sender ID (Alpha Tag), you will need to register your Sender ID with the ACMA through your SMS provider, such as ClickSend. This table will help you identify what type of customer you are, which will then define what steps you need to take.

You are an Australian business and send Sender ID messages directly to your customers or employees from your own business name.

You are an Australian business authorised by another Australian entity to send Sender ID messages. This includes:

  • a research company that has been engaged by a bank to send messages for the bank, using its sender ID

  • a sports club that is authorised to send messages, using a sender ID that is owned by a sports league

  • an advertising or marketing agency engaged by a business to run advertising and promotional campaigns, using a sender ID owned by that business.

You are an Australian business and supply Sender ID messages to other businesses. This includes:

  • SMS aggregators

  • CRM providers

  • SAAS providers

  • CPAAS providers

  • Automated marketing providers

  • Two-factor authentication providers

You send or supply Sender ID messages in Australia or to Australian businesses, but you do not have an ABN or ACN.

You will need to register with the ACMA as a Participating Telco.

Once you have registered with the ACMA, you can choose to register Sender IDs with the ACMA directly, or partner with a Participating Telco like ClickSend to take on the responsibilities of Sender ID registration. Contact your Account Manager or ClickSend Support to discuss your options.

You will need to register with a Certified Telco. ClickSend are in the process of applying for Certified Telco status.
