Ghana +233

Updated 3 months ago

Generally, the support of Sender IDs to Ghana is fully dynamic, but it's advisable to send using an Alpha Numeric sender ID. Alpha tags are supported and require pre-registration.

Generic sender IDs will be blocked, clients should send with the correct sender ID i.e. Sender ID should match message content.

To register your alpha tag, please provide the following details:

  1. Alpha tag (no spaces, 11 characters max):
  2. Website
  3. Company Name
  4. Sample content
  5. Traffic type (transactional, marketing messages, or both)
  6. Service description (OTP, alerts/notifications, or reminders)
  7. Estimated monthly volume

For international businesses, an MTN form is required. Please reach out to your GS Specialist for the updated form.

Registration ETA: 45 business days.

Regulations and Best Practices

MTN operators have deployed strict rules about the usage of SenderIDs approved for marketing use:

  • Any transactional SMS sent using a SID preregistered for marketing/promotional purposes will be charged one USD per SMS.
  • Curfew for marketing messages. Won´t be allowed to submit promotional traffic from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Any SMS sent outside of the permissible timeframe resulting in a regulatory fine, the full liability will be borne by the customer.
  • If the sender ID used is not the brand/company name. MTN requires in the body content something that makes the message unique to the sender such as a company name or brand.
  • The customer is exposed to fines if:
    - Submit marketing traffic outside of the allowed schedule: 8 am to 8 pm local time.
    - Submit transactional traffic through SenderID preregistered for marketing.
  • The marketing SIDs can be requested for registration only if the expected volumes are at least 100K outgoing SMS per month to be sent over the MKT bind. Otherwise, those SIDs will be considered and registered as transactional traffic.
