SMS Delivery Issues to USA

Updated 3 years ago

SMS traffic is heavily restricted when sending to the US. Rules & regulations can be found here.

If you are sending more than 1 message per second on a toll-free number your messages may be blocked. Try to keep your transactional messages below 28,000 per day. However, the networks are more likely to block for message content such as using bit.ly URL shorteners.

If you're using longcodes (normal mobile numbers) to send and you're doing any of the following, it's likely your messages will be blocked by the networks:

  • Sending over 500 messages per day using a single dedicated number
  • Sending repetitive messages to many recipients
  • Sending URLs in messages

This is outside of our control. If any messages are blocked, they will still show as 'Sent' as we're not notified by the networks when this happens.

The best option for marketing messages is to use a short code. There are 2 options:

  1. A dedicated short code. Pricing can be found here: https://www.clicksend.com/us/pricing/. To get started, let your account manager know. Setup time is normally 4-8 weeks.
  2. A shared short code. This is free and can be setup within 24 hours on your account. This option is currently being phased out, contact your account manager to see if it's still an option for you
