All message content needs to be pre-registered before sending. For most networks, only pre-registered Alpha tags are allowed. Alpha tags should only be the company’s name. Any alias, fraudulent name, or generic name will not pass registration.

Only SMS can be sent, MMS is not offered.

How to register an Alpha Tag

Please provide the following details:

  1. Alpha tag (maximum of 11 characters with no spaces and special characters.)
  2. Business name and website
  3. Sample message content
  4. SMS Traffic (Transactional, promotional, or both)
  5. Estimated monthly volume
  6. Service Description (Describe what you will use the Alphanumeric Sender ID for.)
  7. Must fill out some forms that will be sent by our Global Sending Specialist

Registration ETA: 50 business days.

Regulations and Best Practices

  1. MTN operators have deployed very strict rules about the usage of SenderIDs approved for marketing use:
  2. Any transactional SMS sent using a SID preregistered for marketing/promotional purposes will be charged 1 USD per SMS. Please note there is a curfew for marketing messages: promotional traffic is not allowed from 5:00 PM to 8:00 AM. If any SMS is sent outside of this permissible timeframe and results in a regulatory fine, the full liability will be borne by the customer.

List of Forbidden Content:

Personal attacks.

Malicious insinuations.

Insulting or offensive words towards a citizen, a group of citizens, an association or a professional body.

Defamation that undermines the honor of a person or any personality.

Calls to disturb public order.

Publications contrary to modesty and good morals.

Obscene, licentious, or pornographic publications or illustrations.

The publication of false information.

Violations of the privacy of any citizen.

The tobacco.

Gambling.

Politics.

Abusive content.

Electronic advertising.

Direct prospecting.
